You're starting your journey in voice over. You're going through the book, and you see allllll those niches for voice over. It's intimidating isn't it? Where do you begin? That's why I say in the book - more than once - to really take time to go out there on the web and listen to every niche. Listen to them constantly.
I started out doing narration. It turned in to people wanting more more more - while paying me less less less. I was green as grass, so I took some of those, and again, as I wrote in the book, it taught me a lesson. I was feeling my own way around, thinking that because I had a radio background, the VO game would be so easy.
No.
Over time I learned that my biggest strength is doing podcast intros and outros, media commercials, and writing scripts. That's my sweet spot. I lived in that spot for a LONG time before doing other stuff. I wish I could answer why. Just how it played out.
A guy from some Country in Africa reached out to me and asked me if I'd voice some DJ drops. I laughed (online) and said, "Dude, that is not my jam. You're barking up the wrong guy's tree." He INSISTED that I do them, and in return we could both put the demo we make on Fiverr. He'd produce it. The guy sent me some scripts. I got in the booth, but on my deep - mean - manly voice and sent them over. He loved them and started producing them.
Here is a young man living in Africa - in a part of a Country where they only have electricity for certain hours every day. He had this old, very slow laptop, and he learned FROM THAT how to produce the most amazing DJ drops I've ever heard.
I put up a gig, and now - over time - my name is out in the ether as THE GUY to go to for DJ drops.
He inspired me. If a young man somewhere in a shack without electricity can do it - by God - you can do it.
Here's my DJ Drop demo.
