The Power of the word "Free"

If you thought I was going to write the book, and then stop . . . well, you're an idiot. I've fully committed myself to keeping this going, at this pace for the next 2 years. When I commit myself to something, I don't give up.

In the book, you may have heard of it - it's called The Voiceover Hustle: The Good, The Bad, and the MONEY! Purchase by clicking there. *Yes, I'm the white Don King.)

I write a section about doing things free for people sometimes. One thing I've learned in business is, it's very good for you to do free things for people. If a Vet writes needing something. Free. If a woman is buying her 12 year old daughter DJ drops for her Birthday because she's taken it up and love it. Free. If someone is doing a fundraiser for a cop that was shot while on duty. Free. If someone just writes and says they're dead broke but it would make their life if I did an intro for their podcast. 90% of the time. Free.

There's a guy, Will Stenner who owns Discover You Radio. (www.discoveryouradio.com) He's been a client for a long time. His website helps discover music, and he has an online radio station that plays music from bands that aren't signed, broke, etc. It's an absolute super great idea. Bands today cannot make money in the traditional way of making a record, getting signed, and then getting paid by record/album sales.

So how many plays would you have to get in order for 1 person in the band to pay a light bill?
So how many plays would you have to get in order for 1 person in the band to pay a light bill?

Tell me how on God's green Earth, THAT is fair!?

So back to Will. Will placed an order for $100 overnight. His order was a script of ME talking about my book - and he's going to play it on his channel. Okay so let's think about that - a guy who's giving underpaid bands exposure offered the voice guy of his channel a free promo - and then paid him $100 to voice it? I know him well enough to know the outcome of that very sweet gesture wasn't meant to get free pub from me. He did it because he understands the business, he respects that, and he respects others that are cognizant of the fact that almost every facet of the entertainment 'business' has become a dumpster fire.

And yes, it's also called just being a good human being. The distance that goes, the karma that creates, the fulfillment is incredible.

I did those DJ drops for the girl and her Mom sent me the video of her hearing them for the first time. She was ELATED - and I sat here in my office one morning, watching them over and over with tears coming down my face. That feeling was worth so much more than whatever amount of money that would have been. Since then, btw, 4 other sets of parent's have reached out to me to do their kid's drops - all word of mouth from the Mom.

See how it circles back around? Not every time - but that's not why I did it anyway.

In the voiceover business, everything you use outside of your voice was created by someone. Music beds, imaging FX like punches, swooshes, risers, rewinders, statics, etc. I've done probably 15,000 orders in the past six years and I have not once, ever, knowingly used something someone created by stealing it. That is one thing you have to promise yourself you will not do. For one, it's morally wrong. Second, it can and WILL get you kicked off freelance websites to use it, and you could lose a lot of potential income.

So here's to the WILL'S of the World! God Bless you!

I love you ALL!

Keith
